What is the La Mas Festival?
What began in March 2021 as a biannual event meant to empower women, has turned into a cultural celebration in October, with the intention of uplifting matriarchal leadership in Hispanic, Mexican, Indigenous and Chicano communities. The world needs the power of feminine energy to guide, nurture, and create with a fierce presence - one that is devoted to learning and transforming through intentional purpose and connection - and it also needs a safe place to do so.
Each guest speaker is a leader in her respective community and shares stories of perpetual survival that is ongoing due effects of systemic racism, sexism and genderism. Speakers focus on personal experience within community-led initiatives, from creating a database accounting for missing Indigenous women, to showcasing a campaign focused on self-love amplifying women and their stories.
As always, with any Giving Sundays event, the STN team provides items for free distribution to the public. The free market included 300 hygiene items distributed to attendees. The most engaging aspect of the event was the four live bands/local artists/musicians in the community, as well as performances that included drag and professionally-led salsa instruction. The entertainers and speakers spark an amazing amount of support and solidarity across the audience, helping attendees to learn the impact of their choices and how they directly affect neighboring communities that do not have the same level of access to resources, are often targeted by local government and experience tremendous obstacles that decrease the likelihood of keeping family and their culture, intact.
